There have been a couple of rather big developments at The Arpa Protocol recently, and I thought it was time for a little update.
First, A Human Endeavour has been released.
It's a fourteen-track album exploring life, love, loss and some of the strange, wonderful and occasionally frustrating things that come with being human.
Musically, it's a fairly varied collection. I've never been particularly interested in making every song sound as though it belongs in the same box, so the album moves between different styles, moods and ideas. Some songs are reflective, some have a bit more energy, and others take their own unexpected directions.
That's one of the things I enjoy most about making music this way. There's no particular formula to follow. If an idea feels worth exploring, I can follow it and see where it leads.
The complete album is now available to explore on the website, where you can listen to previews, download individual tracks or buy the album. There's also a physical CD edition available through Elastic Stage.
A little room for listening
The other big development is something I've been working on behind the scenes for a while.
The Listening Room is now open.
The idea is quite simple. I wanted to create a dedicated space on the website where people could settle in and listen to the music properly, without having to jump between different album pages.
For £2 a month, members can listen to the full-length recordings from The Arpa Protocol collection, including complete albums and singles, with lyrics available alongside the music.
As new recordings are added to the Listening Room, members will be able to explore those too.
It's not intended to replace buying music. If you'd rather own a track, download an album or have a physical CD on the shelf, those options are still there.
The Listening Room is simply another way to enjoy the collection, particularly if you'd like to spend some time discovering songs you might otherwise have missed.
Why I'm doing it this way
One of the reasons I started rebuilding The Arpa Protocol website was that I wanted the music to have a proper home of its own.
Streaming services are convenient, of course, but I like the idea of having somewhere that isn't built around algorithms, playlists or trying to persuade someone to listen for another thirty seconds.
Some songs need a bit of time. Some take a few listens before they reveal themselves. And sometimes it's nice just to put an album on and see where it takes you.
That's the kind of experience I'd like this website to offer.
The Listening Room is a small step in that direction, and I'm rather pleased with how it's turned out.
And what's next?
There's more music taking shape, including Terms of Exchange, which is planned for 2027. It's quite a different album from the previous releases, and I'll have more to say about it as things develop.
I'm also continuing to work on the songbooks, alongside a few other musical experiments that may eventually find their way onto the site.
But for now, I'm happy to have A Human Endeavour released and the Listening Room up and running.
If you haven't explored either of them yet, you're very welcome to have a look.
